Will is a fourteen-year-old boy growing up Cold Sassy, Georgia at the very beginning of the twentieth century. Although he comes from a conventional family, Will is a free spirit and often feels compelled to defy the rules governing his life. Rucker is a brash, humorous, and domineering man who owns the general store in Cold Sassy.

The main conflict in the novel was based over Rucker getting married only three weeks after his wife passed away. Even though the town thought Rucker did not care about his dead wife Miss Mattie Lou he still respected her by laying blankets of roses over her grave when she was buried.

Rucker's second wife was a woman named Miss Love Simpson whom which Rucker claimed was going to be his housekeeper, yet Rucker wanted a lot more than that from her. Rucker was always trying to please Miss Love by taking her to a hotel and on a vacation which he never did with Mattie Lou , which caused the whole town to go into an uproar. This and the fact that he owned the general store caused him to be robbed by two men who broke one of his ribs, leading to Rucker's death.

Miss Love works for Rucker at his general store. Miss Love does not have her own house and she does not have a family either. This is why she decides to marry Rucker, so she may be able to have her own house. She marries Rucker agreeing to be his housekeeper. One conflict in the novel is over a man named Clayton McAlister, whom which Miss Love was going to marry. Clayton then gives Miss Love a saddle for a horse to show that he loves her, yet Miss Love sends him off.

Now that Miss Love has a saddle she desires to have a horse to put it on, so Will goes to get her a horse that Miss Love then names Beautiful. Miss Love is a lady interested in fighting for rights of women, she is in the women's suffrage movement.

Miss Love provides the main conflict in the novel, making her the antagonist of the novel. She was Rucker's first wife that passed away just before the beginning of the novel. Mattie Lou was very passionate about roses, this is why Rucker left them on her grave.

It is ironic that she is even willing to take the job as earlier in the story Will explains that a milliner was considered low class. The milliner sent to Rucker's store. She is trained and sent by a company in Boston when Rucker gets the idea that he would like to have a milliner in his store.

Thus she is a Yankee and young. Although she says nothing to anyone other than Will, Love sees the little discrepancies of the post war south, the daily acts of racial and sexual bias that they don't see because such things are a part of their lives. Love is friendly, but lonely with her own tale of abuse and lingering inhibitions. She keeps herself aloof from the people in town, although she has the correct number of invitations to dinner and other functions.

People like her, but consider her the outsider. In spite of her apparent distance and self-control, Love wants a family and a home more than anything else. She takes advantage of opportunities to try to belong; she plays the piano in the Methodist church, and when Granny dies, she shows up and volunteers to help clean the house, serve food and keep the dishes washed for the never-ending stream of visitors who attend the wake. She does not, however, react eagerly at the chance to marry Rucker Blakeslee.

She warns him about the gossip that will result, but he doesn't care. She says she would have refused him if she had ever had any idea that he had romantic feelings for him, but she will finally marry him as a housekeeper sleeping in a separate room, and with the house as her eventual pay. To the town, it makes her seem mercenary, but she isn't really. She simply is a bit more modern in her thinking than the people of Cold Sassy. Love continues making gestures to win the people over and seems as successful as she will ever be with her postcards telling people of the goods she is bringing them from New York.

She has a flare for business, but also knows when to stay out of the way as she does when Rucker gets his new car. Love eventually melts under the influence of Rucker's courtship. When she sees that he desperately loves her and that no childhood tragedy is going to drive him away from her, she can't help but respond and love him in return.

Rucker Blakeslee Rucker is the protagonist of Will's story and figure about whom the town revolves, both because of his natural magnetism and because he owns what seems to be one of the primary business of the town.
